We’re delighted to be running three scale events in Wales this year. It was great to return to the Liberty Stadium in Swansea for the first of these and from the word “Go” the atmosphere was buzzing. At the beginning of the day we always ask students to draw their vision of a scientist, engineer or technologist and we really liked this artistic offering from Yasmin Howells. It was really good to see a female scientist – out of 300 students only 13 drew women. By the end of the day, perceptions had changed thanks to the obvious time and effort companies and organisations had put into planning and developing activities which changed minds about what it might be like to work as an engineer.
Companies included including Sony, Airbus, the BBC, JVC, Tata, Atkins and National Grid to name but a few. Everyone had their pictures taken with the Daleks (thank you BBC) and our Young Reporters were busy with their interviews and video camera. The event was a big success according to all of those taking part due in no small part to all the hard work put in by our wonderful partner Technocamps and their enthusiastic team.
