The Information Literacy Group are a Special Interest Group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). Our members include library and information professionals in all sectors (schools, further and higher education, public libraries, health etc.) and we seek to encourage debate and the exchange of knowledge in all aspects of Information Literacy.
We define information literacy as “knowing when and why you use information, where to find it, how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner.” In our view information literacy underpins learning and is a vital set of skills, knowledge and behaviours that everyone needs from cradle to grave, for formal education and for their personal and professional lives.
We are passionate about sharing best practice about information literacy research and practice. Many of our members work directly with different communities (such as students, or members of the public) to develop their information literacy skills. THE ILG run events, sponsor research projects, organize a lively annual conference (LILAC). We also publish an academic journal, the Journal of Information Literacy.
Our work with TeenTech
TeenTech is about developing young people’s interest in science and technology and encourages them to be innovative and creative in their thinking. It is our belief that this goes hand in hand with developing the research and information literacies of young people. Good research to understand why something works, what has been done in the past and how it could be improved, is the foundation of new knowledge and ideas. As Isaac Newton said “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.”
We are therefore passionate about equipping young people with those critical abilities to be discerning about the information they find on the internet, to find the very best quality information and to use that to support their own ideas and thinking.
